The Story Behind The Surfing Tribe
a purpose-driven surf and wellness community
The Surfing Tribe was founded in 2019 by local surfer and former competitive athlete Nahum Corzo as a purpose-driven surf and wellness community in Puerto Escondido.

Built on his personal experience as a successful competitive surfer, The Surfing Tribe was created with a few core principles:

-
Teaching you understand the technique so you can develop your own surfing style, not just getting pushed onto a wave.
-
Helping you reconnect with the earth, the ocean and a greater sense of presence.
-
Building community by creating the Tribe.
our mission
To provide skill-building surf lessons by reading the ocean, developing style, and finding your footing in our tribe; that awaken your inner animal and reconnect you with nature. Surfing with us isn't just an item on your tourist checklist. It's a way back to your own wild, confident self that you can carry with you long after the lesson ends.

Our vision
The Surfing Tribe is more than a surf lesson. It's a community you belong to for life. We're building a system of support and connection to a holistic approach to the surf lifestyle. A place where returning members find abundant resources for healthy living: yoga, meditation, training, ice baths, run clubs, and workshops. Once you join the tribe, you always have a place to come back to.
what we believe in

We bring people together through the ocean. No matter where you come from, there is a place for you here.

health
Progress comes from consistency, patience and respect for the learning process.
The best surfers are always students. Curiosity, humility and a willingness to learn are what drive real progress: in the ocean and in life.
Physical and mental well-being are essential parts of the surfing lifestyle.

a competitive champion
Growing up on the beach resulted in him becoming a highly competitive world athlete. Nahum Corzo was entering and qualifying for local, national, and worldwide (WSL) competitions since his teenage years, and proving his standing by constantly landing among the finalists.

from a family of watermen

Nahum Corzo grew up along side his brothers and cousins who have been established watermen: swimmers, fishermen and surfers. It is no wonder that the Corzo family has so many high profile members when they lived, breathed and supported each other through the surf lifestyle since infancy.

Nahum learned that the ocean demands respect, awareness and adaptability. Those values remain at the heart of The Surfing Tribe. Over the years, he has surfed throughout Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, Brazil, Argentina and Indonesia, experiences that continue to influence his coaching and his perspective on surfing.
more than a surf instructor
Fluent in English and passionate about sharing the local culture of Puerto Escondido, Nahum believes that surfing is about far more than standing up on a board. It's about learning to move with the ocean, overcoming fear, building confidence and discovering a lifestyle connected to nature and community.

After a serious injury changed the direction of his competitive career, Nahum chose a different path: teaching. That decision eventually became the foundation of The Surfing Tribe —a place where technical coaching, local knowledge and genuine hospitality come together.
When he's not in the water, you'll usually find him playing guitar, training, exploring the coast or spending time with the community that continues to shape the tribe.
